About the Exhibition
In GRAVITY, comic_keema looks closely at the forms the human body takes under the force of gravity.
A young child’s body drawn downward by the weight of the head. A pregnant body finding a new balance as its center of gravity shifts. The shape of a body while holding someone, or leaning its weight against something. Under a force that acts equally upon us all, each body takes on a different form.
These forms are shaped not only by weight and posture, but also by the condition of the body at that moment and by its relationship to others. The form we see before us now will not remain the same forever.
The shapes that emerge in this way change with time, and eventually disappear.
About the Process
Many of the subjects I draw are ordinary scenes I have seen again and again in everyday life: the back of a child absorbed in something, a sleeping body released of tension, or the shape of someone holding another person.
When a person is unaware of being watched, something particular to them can appear in the tilt of the body or the way they place their weight. Even forms that seem as though they will always be there gradually change over time. I often find myself tracing their outlines with my eyes, even when I am not drawing.
The forms I have seen repeatedly become simpler little by little in my memory. When I draw with ink, I do not feel that I am searching for each individual line. Rather than reproducing a face or its details, I use the volume of the silhouette, the tilt of the body, and the placement of its weight as clues, drawing as though I am searching for “the shape of that person” that remains in my memory.
The movement of my arm and the rhythm of my breathing become part of this process, coming together as a single line.
